How the town is built
Mebane splits into three distinct eras of housing stock. The historic blocks around downtown and the White Furniture Building carry 1900s-1920s homes on narrow lots where 16- and 20-yard dumpsters fit — these include some of the better-preserved mill-era residential in Alamance County. The mid-century neighborhoods built around the White Furniture workforce era (1930s-60s) have mature trees and standard driveways. The newer subdivisions on the north and south edges of town — especially off Mebane-Oaks Road and the NC-119 approaches — are post-2000 builds with wide driveways and active HOAs. On the commercial side, Mebane carries three distinct categories: downtown Main Street small-shop retail (anchored by the restored White Furniture Building), the Tanger Outlets Mebane retail footprint, and the I-40/I-85 warehouse and distribution industrial strip that dominates the north and east edges of town.
