Running Durham

How the job
works here.

Residential renovations, commercial builds, and municipal events all pull from the same yards. What changes in Durham is how quickly the truck reaches you, how we place it on local ground, and who signs what before it drops.

Step 01 · Delivery

How fast we can be there

Our Mebane yard runs Durham daily — about 35 minutes from our lot to any driveway in town. Same cutoff for renovation drops and construction schedules.

  • Order by 4 PM, we’re at your address the next day
  • Two yards on standby (Mebane + Smithfield) if one is slammed
  • Busy building season doesn’t push the schedule
  • Weekend delivery available on request

Step 02 · Placement

Making it fit your driveway

Old Durham driveways run narrow; newer subdivisions have room to spare. We size the equipment to your address before we drop.

  • Narrow older-neighborhood driveways: we size to 16 or 20 yards
  • Newer I-85 subdivisions: any size we offer will fit
  • Tree canopy or low wires: we confirm clearance first
  • Commercial sites with a loading dock: we deliver right to it

Step 03 · Paperwork

We handle the permits

Durham County disposal paperwork rides on our credentials, not yours. If the town or your HOA needs anything, we tell you before you sign.

  • Durham County disposal permits: on us
  • In your driveway: no town permit at all
  • Street or event drops: we tell you what’s needed
  • HOA time limits on I-85: checked before signing

Areas within Durham

Neighborhoods
on the route.

The truck routes are the same across Durham, but placement is a block-by-block conversation. Each neighborhood below carries the note that changes how we deliver into it.

Downtown Durham + American Tobacco DistrictDowntown revitalization + Lucky Strike factory conversion
The downtown Durham blocks around Main Street and Chapel Hill Street, plus the American Tobacco Historic District just south where the former Lucky Strike factories redeveloped starting 2003 — tenant retail, offices, Durham Bulls Athletic Park, and the Durham Performing Arts Center. Street drops here route through the City of Durham; historic-district placements add preservation review on top.
Duke University + Duke University HospitalCampus + medical complex on the west side
Duke University's west and east campuses plus the Duke University Hospital complex — one of the deepest institutional footprints in NC. Campus work routes through Duke facilities rather than through city municipal review. Compactor-ready placements standard on hospital-side renovation; walking-floor trailers come in on gut-renovation stages.
Trinity Park + Trinity HeightsDuke-adjacent historic residential
The Trinity Park Historic District and Trinity Heights Historic District surrounding Duke's East Campus — 1900s-through-1930s craftsman and bungalow residential on narrow lots. 16- and 20-yard dumpsters do most of the work; district-specific preservation review runs on street-visible drops.
Ninth Street / Old West Durham + Erwin Mills areaTextile-mill-era residential + small-shop commercial
The Old West Durham Historic District around Ninth Street — textile-mill-era residential dating to the Erwin Mills operation, now mixed with independent small-shop commercial along Ninth Street itself. 16- and 20-yard dumpsters for the historic residential; 20- and 30-yard sizes for Ninth Street tenant renovation.
Research Triangle Park (RTP)Shared Durham / Wake / Chatham County footprint
Research Triangle Park sits across Durham, Wake, and a small Chatham County footprint — biotech, pharmaceutical, tech, and research facilities. Project jurisdiction depends on parcel location; we verify the overlap before dispatch. The Research Triangle Foundation of NC coordinates on top of the county-level permits.
Hayti + NC Mutual Life areaHistoric Black Wall Street footprint
The historic Hayti district and the NC Mutual Life Insurance footprint on the south side of downtown — foundational to Durham's heritage as the center of Black entrepreneurship in NC. Portions were lost to mid-century urban renewal, but the surviving historic residential and the NC Mutual Life Insurance Company Building (a National Historic Landmark) remain. Historic-district review applies on street-visible placements.
Perimeter suburban + I-40 / I-85 commercialSuburban residential + interstate commercial
The perimeter suburban residential across the north, east, and south edges, plus the I-40 and I-85 commercial and warehouse strips. Any size dumpster we rent fits most of the perimeter residential driveways; the interstate commercial strips run loading-dock placements on 30- and 40-yard compactor jobs.

Plus every subdivision, farm parcel, and residential street off I-40 and I-85 that isn’t named here.

Questions from Durham

The ones we get
every week here.

How do Durham's historic district reviews work?

Durham carries ten-plus historic district overlays — Trinity Park, Trinity Heights, Old West Durham, Hayti, Lakewood Park, Watts Hospital-Hillandale, Forest Hills, Downtown Durham, American Tobacco, and others. Container placements that will be visible from the street inside any of these districts get a district-specific preservation review on top of the City of Durham permit. We handle the submission as part of standard scheduling. Which district you're in determines the review timeline, and we build the applicable lead time into dispatch.

Can you handle Research Triangle Park (RTP) construction and research-building work?

Yes — RTP is one of the deepest commercial routes on our book. The park straddles Durham, Wake, and a small Chatham County footprint, and the Research Triangle Foundation of NC coordinates on top of the county-level permits. Walking-floor trailers for expansion-phase construction, 30- and 40-yard compactors at loading docks, portable restrooms and dedicated handwashing stations for research-building construction crews, and driven-post perimeter fencing on long runs are all standard here.

Do you serve Duke University and Duke University Hospital campus work?

Yes — both the Duke campus and the Duke University Hospital complex are regular year-round routes. Phased renovation and expansion work with Duke facilities coordinating placement rather than city municipal review. Compactor-ready placements are standard; walking-floor trailers come in on gut-renovation stages. For hospital-side work, we coordinate on access routes so patient flow stays clear.

Can you handle Durham Bulls game-day, DPAC event, or American Tobacco festival setup?

Yes. Durham Bulls Athletic Park home games (April through September), DPAC performance-weekend street closures, and American Tobacco District festival setups all route through our regular event-service book. Portable restrooms, dedicated handwashing stations where food vendors are on site (Durham County rules apply), event-perimeter fencing for crowd control, and dumpsters for cleanup are all standard. We coordinate drop-off with event organizers and the City of Durham on the pre-event schedule.

What about Trinity Park or Trinity Heights renovation specifically?

Trinity Park and Trinity Heights are two of Durham's most-reviewed historic districts because they sit directly adjacent to Duke's East Campus. 1900s-through-1930s craftsman and bungalow residential on narrow lots with mature trees overhead. 16- and 20-yard dumpsters do most of the renovation work there. Street-visible placements get both the City of Durham permit and the district-specific preservation review — we handle both.

My project is near I-40, I-85, NC-147, US-15/501, or US-70 — do I need a state DOT permit?

If the container lands on state-highway land, yes. I-40, I-85, NC-147 (Durham Freeway), US-15/501, and US-70 are all state DOT roads through Durham. The state DOT handles those permits rather than the City of Durham — we note which permit applies on your estimate and submit it. Driveway placements and city-maintained streets don't need the state permit.

How quickly can you have a dumpster in Durham?

Our Mebane yard sits about thirty-five minutes east of Durham on I-85 and I-40 — one of our more direct Mebane routes. For an order placed by the end of the business day, the truck leaves Mebane the next morning. For historic-district, RTP, or Duke campus work with review or coordination timelines involved, we build those lead times into dispatch.

Do you cover the towns near Durham?

Yes. Chapel Hill (west), Carrboro, Hillsborough, Morrisville (south, across the Wake line), Cary, and most of Durham County, plus the Durham-side RTP, all ship from the Mebane yard on next-day scheduling. The Smithfield yard picks up when the route runs south or east.

Two books, one team

Residential and commercial

Same yards, same routes, same next-day cutoff. What changes is the paperwork, the placement, and the pace. Homeowners want a driveway drop and a scheduled pull; contractors want an on-call swap-out cycle. Here’s how each side is set up in Durham.
