How the town is built
High Point's commercial side is unlike anywhere else in central NC. The downtown Market District is dense with multi-story showroom buildings that go from near-empty between Markets to filled with temporary exhibits, teardown crews, and tenant turnover work twice a year. On the residential side, the Washington Street Historic District carries older homes on narrow lots where 16- and 20-yard dumpsters fit. The mid-century neighborhoods around Emerywood and the Northgate area have 1940s-60s homes with mature trees. Newer subdivisions along the US-311 approaches have the standard post-2000 build profile — wide driveways, active HOAs. Manufacturing-adjacent commercial sits on the south and west sides of town, including the Thomas Built Buses campus and the broader furniture supply chain operations.
